Well it’s taken longer than I thought but Butterscotch Cottage can now be viewed in world at my Ven River store. But hold on….it’s not for sale just yet!
I always rez my houses first, then finish the landscaping and fix any snagging and then test everything. Plus I love to get some initial feedback before making any last minute amendments. So when you have a few minutes come on over and let me have your thoughts!
Butterscotch Cottage ~ Second Life
So what’s different about this cottage? Well she’s Part Mesh for a start (that’s Polygon Mesh for the uninitiated) which means Second Life builders can now create higher levels of detail and usually (but not always) a lower Land Impact score (LI).
- This is a texture change cottage crammed with delicious details and based on a coastal seaside theme. When you walk in you should calm, relaxed and as though you were on holiday somewhere lush
- She has warm, clean textures which you can change via a simple texture panel. You will have over 100 different texture combinations so remember to keep some time aside for decorating
- It’s a mid size cottage ~ bigger than Riverside Cottage but smaller than Honeybee and Bluebelle cottages
- It has blinds and fancy style curtains all changeable via the easy to use texture menu
- It has three rooms upstairs, a living room, kitchen area and a light filled conservatory downstairs
- Not to mention the verandah and loads of outdoor space

It will suit plots of 400m plus so good for smaller plots but watch out for a smaller version coming soon.
And that’s not all….
- Some accessories will be included in the price namely;
- Fires
- Low prim Mesh picture frame sets (copy/Mod)
- Lanterns
- Walk in closet
- All the lights are as usual controllable via a simple switch
- Chairs
- Plus a few other freebies as I create them

Differences Between Mesh & Old Style Prim Building
When buying a Mesh or Partial Mesh house it’s important to appreciate that Mesh and Prims behave very differently in a build which means that if you enjoy modifying the houses you buy, it’s even more important to know what to do. Here are some things to bear in mind:
- Mesh objects when joined together can show a lower Land Impact than the combined total of the separate, individual items. This means that you will need to understand how to combine them and optimise the physics to get the lowest possible LI
- Setting the physics for each object in the correct way will help to keep the LI down. Physics here just means the way that objects interact with the Virtual World and Avatars, literally its physical properties in the Metaverse such as collision, whether you can walk on/through it etc. You will find the physics tab in ‘Edit Object’ >>> Features Tab
- Setting the wrong physics type or changing the physics type from the original build (without understanding the consequences) can often have a big or strange impact on your use of the building i.e. changes made incorrectly may cause you to fall through floors, unable to walk through arches, doorways, become stuck in walls etc, so be careful when making any modifications! Only make alterations if you are quite confident in your building skills and ALWAYS take a copy of your house before you start
- Often Mesh builds are made to keep the LI as low as possible by creating the house as a more or less single object but this can limit the owner’s ability to make changes to suit their needs. There is quite a lot of debate around this at the moment and the alternative is to make Mesh builds more modular so that owners still have to chance to downsize, upsize or just simply redecorate. Butterscotch Cottage is a modular build with prims, sculpties and Mesh used where best needed to optimise LI. The LI for this cottage will be around 230
- Adding scripts to MESH or Part MESH builds can also increase LI as can making the structure or part of the structure bigger
Those are the main things to think about but in the next few weeks when this build is finalised I will add on a dedicated Mesh page to this blog which will explain more of the technical detail and help you to make the most of your purchases.
